On March 9th, 2011 Iraj Afshar passed away. Born on October 8th, 1925, in Teheran, the son of Mahmud Afshar, he has been one of Iran's most prominent intellectuals, joining impressive knowledge and profound research with managerial capacity in the field of culture. He was a scholar of Iranian Studies in the widest of meanings, specializing in Iranian and Islamic codicology, with a true passion for the history of his country and chiefly for the 19th and 20th centuries. Director of the Library of the Tehran University, publisher, professor at home and abroad, Iraj Afshar represented a constant reference for scholars both in Iran and out of the country, ready to help all those in search of advice. The entire scholarly community has lost one of itsmost authoritative members and so has the Societas Iranologica Europaea, which had the honour to count Iraj Afshar among its honorary members
