The starred fill of the initial letters comes from the apse mosaic of the Archbishop Andrea's palace chapel in Ravenna.

The pencilled version of the SIE logo is due to the skilful hand of Anna Maria Cosmi, an Italian graphic designer.

The logo of the 2003 conference was inspired by the mosaic of the Magi in the church of St. Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna. The three Wise Men bring the initial letters of the Societas towards the star symbolizing the Orient.
